Faculty and Staff Awards

The Faculty offers five awards to recognize excellence in faculty and staff. The Faculty and Staff Awards program began in 2016.

2023 Award Winners 

  • Jane Chin - Teaching Excellence Co-Winner - Dr. Jane Chin is an exceptional educator whose passion for teaching, dedication to student success, and ability to foster a supportive and collaborative learning environment make her an outstanding candidate for the Teaching Excellence Award. Her innovative teaching methods, mentorship, and commitment to guiding students through their educational and professional journeys are truly commendable and deserve recognition.
  • Ben Kutsyuruba - International Research and Collaboration - Ben has demonstrated outstanding international research and collaborations that have impacted educators on various continents. He is recognized as an international leader in the areas of educational leadership and policy, and mentorship. His international service to the profession is commendable.
  • Brandon Ruck - Service Excellence - Brandon's creativity, strong business sense, creativity, and leadership have had a profound impact on our Faculty in a short time. Through his dedication and commitment, Brandon has played a pivotal role in reimagining the success of CTE and Professional Studies. 
  • Michelle Searle - Teaching Excellence Co-Winner - Michelle is not only an expert in her field of study and practice, but she is gloriously curious about how to think about and understand things in new ways. Because of this, Michelle creates a level of excitement and inquiry in her teaching and mentorship that invites students to discover what their current abilities and needs are and to purposely set goals. One of the gifts Michelle brings to her students is her awareness that learning is not linear, and that each student’s journey is an individual one.
  • Lauren Smart-Lampl - Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity - Lauren is one of the greatest assets we have the Faculty of Education. She is smart, determined, funny, and a hard worker. When she sees something wrong, she tries to figure out how to make it right - and works to do so even if it is complicated. She has made the Faculty a better place for everyone.

2022 Award Winners 

  • Alana Butler - Award for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity - Alana exemplifies a progressive, ethical and thoughtful pedagogy that is in alignment with the Faculty of Education’s mission and her efforts have made a lasting impact not only on our educational policies and practices but on future generations of educators as well.
  • Mitch Champagne - Teaching Excellence Award - Mitch is an exciting teacher who engages his students and comes well prepared to class. He comes with a wealth of knowledge and yet is always willing to learn more from his students. He has a gentle way of teaching and makes sure that all of his students feel valued and important. His style of teaching encourages student participation and engagement. 
  • Rosa Bruno-Jofré - International Research and Collaboration Award - As a member of the Royal Society for Canada, Rosa has consistently demonstrated excellence in relation to her research. She also coordinates the Theory and History of Education International Research Group.
  • Kristy Timmons - Research Excellence Award - Dr. Timmons holds competitive research grants from multiple sources, including SSHRC and the Kids Brain Health Network. She also recently launched the ECE Lab. Dr. Timmons research collaborations include diverse stakeholders, demonstrating her commitment to co-production and involving end-users to increase the relevance of her work. Consequently, her work contributes to tangible impacts in practice and policy for front-line educators.
  • Jamie Kincaid - Service Excellence Award - On a daily basis Jamie provides a level of service that not only meets but exceeds expectations.  She treats those around her with respect and consideration. She always makes time, no matter how busy she is, to stop and listen to students and colleagues, allowing them to feel valued and “part of the process”.

2021 Award Winners 

  • Michelle Searle - Research Excellence Award - Michelle’s research is at the cutting edge of assessment and program evaluation. She uses collaborative approaches to evaluation, regularly includes partners from other universities and school districts, and spans important issues of practice for educators including equity, mental health and well-being.
  • Lee Airton - Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity - Lee is a creative scholar, a compassionate supervisor, and an individual dedicated to EDI, particularly around supporting gender non-confirming students. From their work on Gegi, to their action-research project in the Practicum Office, their academic pursuits always have real-world impact.
  • Stephanie Barnaby - Service Excellence Award - Stephanie is an astounding leader. She leads the Practicum Office team with enthusiasm, positivity, intelligence and passion. She instills confidence in her team, and creates a caring, warm and open team culture. Stephanie works hard for our candidates and shows so much passion for education.
  • Erin Rennie - Service Excellence Award - Erin demonstrates, daily, an amazing commitment not only to our graduate students but to her staff, colleagues, and the Faculty of Education as a whole. She is an exceptional person, colleague, and manager who is giving of her time, knowledge, and guidance.

2020 Award Winners

  • Ben Kutsyuruba - Research Excellence Award - One of the most prominent international scholars in the fields of educational leadership, policy and change and early teacher development. His work…has made a significant and positive impact to educational theory and practice that is manifest in global implementations of improved models, processes, and practices for educators and administrators at many level.
  • Chrystalla Frantzeskos - Service Excellence Award - Chrystalla has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the GDPI/PME program and its stakeholders through her conscientious and caring nature, highly responsive communication, openness to learning, and collaborative, community-oriented approach. Chrystalla consistently sets a high standard of excellence for herself that is undeniably worthy of recognition through the Faculty’s Service Excellence Award.
  • Liv Rondeau - Award for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity- In her time as a student, volunteer, and staff member at the Faculty of Education Liv has brought an unparalleled passion, energy and creativity to her work and become a leader in bringing Indigenous knowledge, language and culture to students, faculty, and staff.

Overview

The Award for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity is given annually to a faculty or staff member who demonstrates outstanding and sustained commitment to Indigenous education, inclusion, equity, or diversity. Nominees should support the Faculty’s mission to develop progressive, ethical, and thoughtful leaders in education. The Award for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity recognizes ongoing work by faculty and staff members who demonstrate a significant and sustained impact on educational practices, policy, and/or the community, including the community at the Faculty of Education. The nominee should demonstrate leadership in advancing their commitment to indigeneity, inclusion, and equity work in the Faculty and beyond.

Eligibility

All current faculty and staff are eligible for the award. Award recipients from the previous three years are not eligible for the nomination.

Guidelines

Nominations for this award can be made by staff, faculty members, and students at the Queen’s Faculty of Education. A minimum of 2 letters of support are required, in addition to the nomination form - i.e., at least three people supporting the nomination total. The letters should describe in detail how the nominee meets the criteria.

The  nomination form (PDF 139 KB) and 2 supporting letters, must be submitted by August 8 to the Dean's Office (edudeans@queensu.ca).

The recipient of the Award for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity will receive $1,000 and a letter from the Dean recognizing their accomplishment.

Award for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in the three categories listed below.

A. An ongoing and sustained commitment to indigeneity, inclusion, and equity:

  • Engages in indigeneity, inclusion, and equity work that impacts educational practice and policy, leading to improved models, processes, and practices.
  • Recognized for their commitment to indigeneity, inclusion, and equity inside and outside of the Faculty of Education.

B. Innovation:

  • Models indigeneity, inclusion, and equity work that sets precedents for the entire community in the Faculty of Education and beyond.
  • Instigates initiatives to foster a community respectful of equity, diversity, and inclusion

C. Impact:

  • Makes substantial contributions to the culture, policy, and practice regarding indigeneity, inclusion, and equity
  • Engages the entire community in the Faculty of Education in diverse ways to support equity, diversity, and inclusion

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed based on the criteria by the Dean’s Advisory Committee for Outstanding Work in Indigeneity, Inclusion, and Equity, chaired by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research.

Overview

The Teaching Excellence Award is given annually to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding, teaching, creates innovative learning environments, and supports student success. Nominees should be individuals who support the Faculty’s mission to develop progressive, ethical, competent, and thoughtful leaders in education.

Eligibility

All current faculty members, including Continuing and Term Adjuncts, are eligible for the Teaching Excellence Award. Award recipients from the previous three years are not eligible for the nomination.

Guidelines

Nominations for this award can be made by students, alumni, staff, or faculty members at the Queen’s Faculty of Education.  A minimum of 2 letters of support must be submitted by students, alumni, staff, or faculty members, in addition to the nomination form - i.e., at least three people supporting the nomination total. A minimum of one letter should be from a student or alum. The supporting letters should describe in detail how the nominee fulfills one or more of the Teaching Excellence Award criteria.

The  nomination form (PDF 139 KB) and 2 supporting letters, must be submitted by August 8 to the Dean's Office (edudeans@queensu.ca).

Recognition

The recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award will receive $1,000 and a letter from the Dean recognizing their accomplishment.

Teaching Excellence Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following categories:

A.    Excellence in Teaching Practice

  • Enacts pedagogical content within their field,
  • Incorporates their research into instruction,
  • Creates an environment which fosters learning, critical thinking, and understanding,
  • Provides students with timely, helpful feedback and leadership to support and strengthen learning.

B. Innovation in Teaching and Learning

  • Promotes student-centered, inquiry-based learning and critical thinking,
  • Uses innovative instructional strategies for student engagement,
  • Incorporates new technologies to enhance student learning. 

C. Building a Learning Community

  • Mentors and supports colleagues on the innovative use of media and new technologies,
  • Provides workshops or other programming on strengthening teaching or research practices,
  • Demonstrates excellence in mentoring early career colleagues, graduate students, or post-doctoral fellows.

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed by the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the Teaching Excellence Award based on the Teaching Excellence Criteria, chaired by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies.

Overview

The Research Excellence Award is given annually to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding research in their field. The winner should support the Faculty’s mission to develop progressive, ethical, competent, and thoughtful leaders in education. The Research Excellence Award recognizes superior research by faculty members in the Queen’s Faculty of Education. The winner's research will demonstrate a significant and sustained impact on educational practices, the researcher's field, and the community. The researcher should demonstrate leadership in advancing her/his research, and be recognized by peers nationally and internationally.

Eligibility

All current faculty members are eligible for the Research Excellence Award. The award recipients of the Research Excellence and the International Research and Collaboration Awards from the previous three years are not eligible for the award.

Guidelines

The Dean and Associate Deans will select the award winner based on research excellence from Annual Report submissions, rather than from nominations, which historically have been scarce for this award.

Recognition

The recipient of the Research Excellence Award will receive $1,000 and a letter from the Dean recognizing their accomplishment.

Research Excellence Criteria

Nominees for the Research Excellence Award should demonstrate excellence in the three categories listed below.

A. Innovation in research

  • Engages in innovative research that impacts theory and practice, responds to current challenges in education, and leads to improved models, processes, and practices,
  • Demonstrates research excellence through refereed publications, invited presentations, and research funding.

B. Leadership

  • Demonstrates excellence in mentoring graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and early career colleagues,
  • Leads collaborative research teams and partnerships across faculties and institutions, both nationally and internationally.

C. Impact on the community and profession 

  • Makes substantial contributions to the local, national, and international professional community through workshops, lectures, and research partnerships and collaborations,
  • Engages the community through public lectures, workshops, and resources,
  • Produces research outcomes that impact policy and professional practice,
  • Recognized as a national and/or international leader by colleagues and community members.

Selection Process

The Dean and Associate Deans will select the award winner based on research excellence from Annual Report submissions, rather than from nominations, which historically have been scarce for this award.

Overview

The Service Excellence Award is given annually to a staff member who demonstrates excellent service and has made outstanding contributions to the Faculty and community. This award recognizes the ongoing work of staff members that demonstrates a significant and sustained impact to programs, policies, events, services, and the Faculty community.

Eligibility

All current Faculty of Education staff members are eligible for the Service Excellence Award. Nominations will only be accepted for individual staff members (not teams).

Guidelines

Nominations for this award can be made by students, alumni, staff, or faculty members at the Queen’s Faculty of Education. Two letters of support must be provided from the Faculty of Education community, in addition to the nomination form - i.e., at least three people supporting the nomination total.

Recognition

The recipient of the Service Excellence Award will receive $1,000 and a letter from the Dean recognizing their accomplishment.

Service Excellence Award Criteria

Nominations for the Service Excellence Award are based on a nominee’s demonstrated excellence in one or more of the categories listed below:

  • Provides outstanding contributions to the development of programs, policies, or events for the Faculty,
  • Fosters strong and effective links between schools, boards, faculty, staff, and the community,
  • Builds links to the local, national, and international community through programming, policy, and networking.

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed by Dean’s Advisory Committee for the Service Excellence Award based on the Service Excellence Criteria, chaired by the Director, Finance and Administration.

Overview

The International Award is given annually to a faculty or staff member who demonstrates outstanding work to support and increase the Faculty's international presence and reputation. Nominees should be individuals who support the Faculty’s mission to develop progressive, ethical, competent, and thoughtful leaders in education.

Eligibility

All current faculty and staff members are eligible for the International Award. Recipients of this award from the previous three years are not eligible for the nomination.

Guidelines

Nominations for this award can be made by staff, faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, or research fellows at the Queen’s Faculty of Education. A minimum of 2 letters of support are required, in addition to the nomination form - i.e., at least three people supporting the nomination total. The letters should describe in detail how the nominee fulfills the International Award Criteria.

The  nomination form (PDF 139 KB) and 2 supporting letters, must be submitted by August 8 to the Dean's Office (edudeans@queensu.ca).

Recognition

The recipient of the International Award will receive $1,000 and a letter from the Dean recognizing their accomplishment.

International Award Criteria

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following:

  • Works to support and/or increase the international reputation and presence of the Faculty
  • Engages in internationally focused research that impacts theory and practice and responds to current challenges in international education
  • Actively collaborates with visiting international scholars and visiting research students on projects, colloquia, workshops, etc.
  • Participates in international, collaborative research teams and partnerships
  • Recognized as an international leader by colleagues and community members

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed by the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the International Research and Collaboration Award based on the International Research and Collaboration Criteria, chaired by the Manager, International.
