Vision Statement
Mentoring graduate students lies at the core of our mandate. Central to this mandate is attention to the type of learning environment that develops a sense of community, with inclusivity as an articulating principle. This sense of community is built by cultivating virtues such as humility, intellectual discipline, perseverance, and intellectual hospitality – a term coined by Dewey to denote openness, respect, and courage of mind.
Courage of mind is a leading force behind our systematic inquiry. Our faculty members strive to prepare fine, rigorous academics, but we also hope that our graduate students seek to become critical intellectuals and educational leaders. Why do we need courage of mind? It spurs new ways of thinking, it inspires us to pose substantial new questions, and it ultimately breaks conceptual ground. Courage of mind also permits us to think deeply in ways that move beyond vulgar and simplistic forms of relativism.
We grapple with issues that challenge educators’ imagination and political will through thoughtful engagement with practical wisdom as well as with educational aims. These issues are rooted in a classical debate about educational values and the related question of what constitutes a good life within a just society.
Our graduate programs provide an intellectual setting where faculty, staff, and students participate in an ongoing process of building a community of inquirers in the highest sense of the term. Developing such a community requires a commitment – in Noddings’ terms – to caring for ourselves, for others, for ideas, and for the earth.
