Aboriginal Teacher Education (ATE)
This program track is especially suited to Aboriginal students (Status, non-Status or Métis) who are interested in Aboriginal education. It may be of particular interest to mature students and those with experience in Aboriginal education. It features courses with Aboriginal-specific content, as well as practice teaching placements in First Nations schools. The program track in Aboriginal Teacher Education prepares Aboriginal candidates to teach in First Nations schools.
There are two ATE track options:
- ATE Campus-based (full-time, fall/winter option)
- ATE Community-based (part-time option)
Campus-based (full-time, fall/winter option)
ATE fall/winter option is a one-year, full-time, on-campus Bachelor of Education program track. A previous university degree is required for admission consideration, and the ATE program track is available in both the Primary-Junior and Intermediate-Senior program options.
Interested applicants should refer to the Admission Criteria for details on required supplemental documents and deadlines.
Concurrent Education teacher candidates may apply to the ATE campus-based program track in the year immediately preceding
their final BEd year.
Concurrent Education teacher candidates do not apply for these program tracks through OUAC, but rather they submit supplemental materials directly to the Queen’s Concurrent Education Assistant (in the Education Registrar’s Office). Concurrent Education students will use their Queen’s student number in place of the OUAC application number on all Program Track forms and supplemental materials. Detailed information about program track applications (and required documents) will be emailed to fourth year teacher candidates in the fall. The deadline for submitting program track supplemental documents is the last Friday in November in the year preceding final year Education.
For more information on the ATE Program Track, refer to the Aboriginal Teacher Education website.
Community-based (part-time option)
ATE community-based option is a two-year, part-time, multi-session degree or diploma program track in the Primary-Junior (Junior-Kindergarten to Grade 6) option only. A minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent is required for admission consideration. Classes for this option are currently offered in the western James Bay, Fort Frances, and Manitoulin-North shore regions. The application procedures and requirements are different from the fall/winter option, and can be found on the Aboriginal Teacher Education website (link below).
