Special Student Admission

(Excerpt from the School of Graduate Studies Calendar)

A Special Student is a graduate or equivalent who elects to take one or more graduate courses, but who is not registered in a graduate degree program at Queen's University.  Students who register in this category do so normally as enrichment to their professional fields.

  1. Special students are not entitled to audit courses.
  2. Fees will be charged per course.
  3. A student who takes courses in this manner is not allowed a waiver of normal entrance requirements to any subsequent graduate degree program.
  4. Upon the recommendation of the graduate department or program to Division, and with the agreement of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, up to 50% of the course work requirement of a specific graduate degree program may consist of graduate course credits earned while a special student, provided that those graduate course credits have not been credited towards any other degree of any kind.

Language of Instruction and Communication

At Queen's University English is the language of instruction and communication. Proficiency in English is, therefore, a prerequisite for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not recently studied for at least one complete year at a post-secondary institution where English is the official language of instruction, will be required to obtain satisfactory results in an English language proficiency test (580 or higher on the paper-based test), as part of the application process. Those tests recognized by the School of Graduate Studies and Research are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).  Both of these tests are offered widely around the world. International students applying to Queen's should arrange to take one of these tests in sufficient time for the results to be available at the time of application. An official score report must be submitted with the application for admission (Inst. Code 0949, Dept. 85). To be competitive applicants should also achieve a minimum of 4.5 on the Test of Written English (TWE).
