Ph.D. Admission

How to Apply

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Ph.D. program is based upon completion of a Master's degree in Education or related discipline, with first class standing at a recognized university.

Professional experience in education or a related field is an asset.

As part of the application process, applicants are required to submit a brief research proposal (1 to 2 pages maximum — additional pages will not be read), which is ranked by the Admissions Committee. An offer of admission to the Ph.D. in Education program can only be made if there are faculty available and able to provide the scholarly expertise required for the proposed research. Therefore, applicants are strongly encouraged to contact potential dissertation supervisors individually before applying, one or two is recommended, and if he/she has agreed to supervise this should be indicated in the required two page proposal. Faculty members and their research interests can be found on the Faculty website at:  http://educ.queensu.ca/faculty/index.shtml

Applicants who experience difficulty in finding a potential supervisor are encouraged to contact Erin Wicklam, Graduate Assistant, at edphd@queensu.ca <mailto:edphd@queensu.ca> for assistance.

At Queen's University English is the language of instruction and communication. Proficiency in English is, therefore, a prerequisite for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not recently studied for at least one complete year at a post-secondary institution where English is the official language of instruction, will be required to obtain satisfactory results in an English language proficiency test (580 or higher on the paper-based test), as part of the application process. Those tests recognized by the School of Graduate Studies and Research are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).  Both of these tests are offered widely around the world. International students applying to Queen's should arrange to take one of these tests in sufficient time for the results to be available at the time of application. An official score report must be submitted with the application for admission (Inst. Code 0949, Dept. 85). To be competitive applicants should also achieve a minimum of 4.5 on the Test of Written English (TWE).
