2007 Duncan McArthur Series: Celebrating 100 years since the first founding of the Faculty of Education

Duncan McArthur portrait and his family members during a plaque unveiling as part of the 100 year celebration since the first founding of the Faculty. Patrick Hardy (son-in-law), Susan Hardy Butler (granddaughter), Janice Fraser (granddaughter-in-law) and James Fraser (grandson).
The creation of the Faculty of Education in 1907 was considered by Hilda Neatby an experiment of significance although not entirely successful. It was closed in the spring of 1920 when the preparation of teachers in Ontario was centralized in Toronto.
The Ministry of Education approved and signed an agreement to open Duncan McArthur College of Education at Queen’s University in 1965 where it was temporarily housed at 131 Union Street. The first class started in September 1968 under the leadership of Dean Vernon Ready and it became the Faculty of Education in 1971. The new Faculty building was constructed from 1969 -1971 and named after Duncan McArthur.
